I love biscuits! I pair them with steaks, fried chicken swimming in gravy and tea! In fact, I’ve been buying and making them so often that I always end up having leftovers lying in the fridge, freezer or my pantry. So much so, that I seem to have enough to feed my entire family for 2 days! And since we don’t want things to go to waste, especially great tasting, homemade Southern biscuits, we need to find out how to reheat biscuits properly.

Biscuits can be used in so many ways. We have been making Southern-style biscuits not just for our fried chicken and gravy, but also for breakfast sandwiches, chicken fried steaks and even for tea time and desserts. My grandmother makes the best strawberry shortcake using her homemade biscuits – a sweet treat that I now regularly make with my little girls.

Given that you already have a pack or a container of pre-baked biscuits at home, you are now tasked to find out how to properly store and reheat them while you make sure that they don’t dry out and crumble.​

How to Store Homemade Biscuits to Keep Them Fresh

There are several ways to store your baked biscuits. And these may not seem to come as a surprise anymore. But it definitely pays to know what you should and should not do before you think about keeping a batch of your favorite biscuits at home. Before anything else, always cool your freshly baked biscuits before storing them.

  1. Pantry

 

  • You can cover the biscuits with foil or plastic wrap to make sure that they stay fresh and wouldn’t dry out.

Reheating Biscuits in a Pan

 

  1. Room Temperature Biscuits (Stored in the Pantry)
  1. Start by wrapping each biscuit in tin foil. This will keep them from burning even if you are using a top-notch cookware for glass top stoves.
  2. Preheat your pan and always place it in the middle of the heating pad or grill for even heat distribution. The heat should be low.
  3. Place the wrapped biscuits in the pan and warm for 1 minute on each side. Remove from the heat. Serve based on your preference.

*Note: You can also brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter or oil to keep them moist and to infuse more flavor. If you want a toastier biscuit, you can skip the aluminum foil and toast the biscuits directly in the pan.

  1. Reheating Biscuits from the Refrigerator
  1. Preheat your pan.
  2. Glaze the chilled baked biscuits with melted butter, coconut or olive oil. This will prevent the outsides from burning and heating up faster than the insides.
  3. Wrap each biscuit in tin foil and place each one in the pan.
  4. Always maintain a low heat because you do not want them to dry out.
  5. Heat for 1 to 1 and ½ minutes per side (this depends on the thickness of the biscuits) Flip every 30 seconds.

  3. Reheat the biscuits for about 1 minute per side, or keep them longer they are thicker and heavier.
  4. Flip the biscuits every 30 seconds. This will help thaw out the frozen water inside the dough, as well as keeping them moist and evenly toasted.

Reheating Baked Biscuits in the Microwave

 

  1. Reheating Room Temperature Biscuits
  1. Wrap the biscuits in a moist towel and place them in a microwavable dish. The biscuits should be completely covered so they will not dry out.
  2. Cover the container but do not press the lid all the way. You would still want to have a gap for the steam to escape.
  3. Reheat for 2 minutes on a medium setting.
  1. Reheating Chilled or Refrigerated Biscuits
  1. Brush the biscuits with oil or melted butter. Place them in a microwave-safe container.
  2. Cover but do not lock it. You need a vent for some of the steam to pass through.
  3. Microwave for 3 minutes on medium heat.
  1. Reheating Frozen Baked Biscuits
  1. Start by wrapping the biscuits in a moist towel and place them in a microwavable container with a lid.
  2. Press the lid down without locking it.
  3. Microwave on its highest setting for 4 minutes.

*Note: if your microwave has one setting, you might want to increase the time instead. Continue checking the biscuits if they are soft enough and reheat as necessary.

Reheating Room Temperature, Chilled, and Frozen Biscuits

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with non-stick parchment paper or a silicon mat.
  2. Place each biscuit evenly on the tray. You can brush oil or butter on top to add more flavor and to keep them moist.
  3. Use the following baking times for each type of biscuit:
    1. Room Temperature Biscuits – 3 minutes
